Piccadilly Circus is the famous public space in the City of Westminster. It is the road junction that connects Regents Street and Picadilly, linking the major shopping areas and entertaining spots of the west end of the city, such as the theatres of the Shaftesbury Avenue and the Haymarket.

Since 1819 it was a busy traffic interchange, and the first electronic advertisement appeared in 1910. Nowadays it is worldwide recognized, by its neon lights and its video displays, as a symbol of London.

By the southwestern corner stands one of the best known statues in London, the Shaftesbury Memorial. This is a fountain that commemorates the philanthropist Lord Shaftesbury with a bronze statue of Anteros on its top, which is popularly (and incorrectly) known as the statue of Eros, or as the Angel of Christian Charity.

Picadilly Circus is one of the major nightlife meeting points. It is surrounded by some of the best pubs and bars which attract not only numerous and varied foreign visitors, but also Londoners from all ages.

Even though the lights are turned off in some special occasions (such as the death of Winston Churchill and of Princess Diana), there is always light and movement on Picadilly Circus, representing the dynamic London lifestyle.
