Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is located in Westminster, Central London. It is surrounded by major London tourist and cultural attractions such as the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the St. Martin in the Fields Church. It is one of the most famous squares in the United Kingdom and was named due to the Battle of Trafalgar where the British navy defeated France and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars.

Trafalgar Square has several monuments and fountains but, due to its historical implications, the monument located in the heart of the square is Nelson’s statue, in honor of Lord Horatio Nelson, the commandant of the British fleet in the Battle. It is surrounded by two fountains (one is a memorial to Lord Jellicoe and the other to Lord Beatty) and with four bronze guarding lions.

Each one of the four corners of the square has a plinth. Three of them hold statues (George IV, Henry Havelock and Sir Charles James Napier) and the fourth one, which has been empty for several years due to lack of agreement on which statue to place on it, holds since 2007 different works of modern art as part of a rotating program.

Other famous statues include one of James II and one George Washington, which is a gift of the Virginia’s State.

Due to its symbolic value over the Londoners, Trafalgar Square has always been a reference for political demonstrations as well as a social meeting point. The square is also used for celebrations, where thousands of people join to welcome the New Year, the VE day (celebration of the end of the II World War), and Christmas, when a special Christmas tree (gift of Norway) is lighted in the centre of the square as part of a tradition that started back in 1947.

Cultural events, performances, shows and other special activities are often organized at Trafalgar Square; therefore it's a must-see destination for London visitors.
